Ricardo F. Tapilatu, Ph.D, a lecturer with the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) and a researcher on staff of the Research Center for Pacific Marine Resources  (P2SP2) – at the University of Papua (UNIPA) has been elected as a ‘Pew Marine Conservation Fellow 2018’ representing Indonesia. The official announcement was released by Pew Charitable Trusts in Washington DC, USA on 15 February 2018: http://www.pewtrusts.org/en/projects/marine-fellows. Dr. Tapilatu was nominated by Distinguished Professor Susan Williams (http://bml.ucdavis.edu/research/faculty/susan-williams/) from Bodega Marine Laboratory – University of California – Davis (UCDavis) – USA. Following nomination, Dr. Tapilatu had to compete with others at national level and internationally and had to pass an extra-rigorous selection process by an independent international selection committee. This year a total of 8 Marine Conservation Fellows were chosen representing Indonesia, Fiji, South Africa, Chile, China, Japan, and USA (two): http://www.pewtrusts.org/en/projects/marine-fellows/fellows-directory.  To date, a total of 168 Marine Fellows have been chosen from various disciplines representing a total of 38 countries. Previously, two Indonesians have been selected as Marine Fellows, both representing an International NGO, and for the first time in 2018 a Marine Fellow from Indonesia has been selected from an academic organization. Marine Fellows will have unique support for 3 years to implement rigorous scientific research addressing global ocean-related issues including coastal ecosystems, habitat warming, and marine debris: http://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/blogs/compass-points/2018/02/15/pews-2018-marine-fellows-to-tackle-pressing-ocean-issues

The Pew Marine Fellowship is unique and attractive because elected fellows participate in both a new batch workshop and a yearly meeting  which takes place in different countries  to discuss the challenges and progress encountered in implementing the research activities of all Marine Fellows.
